Armed police were deployed in Carlisle following an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police have arrested a man, in his 40s, in connection with an assault at an address in Edward Street.

Cumbria police said they were called at around 3.25am that a man, in his 30s, had sustained a number of suspected stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital and subsequently discharged, with his injuries not proving life-threatening.

Investigations have been underway and a police operation was carried out Sunday afternoon and evening that led to the arrest.

Cumbria police added: “The operation involved arrest inquiries being carried out a number of addresses in the city. As a result, residents may have noticed a larger-than-usual police presence in Carlisle today.”

Armed police were deployed as a precaution due to the nature of the assault.

Five people in total have now been arrested, police said today, Monday March 30. Read more here.
