The final round of qualifying in this season’s Derwent Valley Asbestos Removal and Demolition sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial Team Knockout Handicap Trophy dominated the week’s programme.
It brought the group stages to a dramatic conclusion, with qualification for both the main knockout and plate competitions on the line.
With handicaps continuing to play a decisive role, several tightly contested frames ultimately shaped the final standings across both groups.
Workington Golf Club secured top spot in Group A with a narrow 3–2 victory over Maryport Social in a match that swung throughout.
Simon Frazer (+32) opened strongly for the Golf Club, controlling proceedings to defeat Ryan Ismay (+15) 75–25.
The advantage was extended in frame two as Lewis Tilley (+40) delivered a composed 68–26 win over Andrew Sharp (+32).
The Golf Club extended their lead in frame three, with Phil Sorfleet (+19) producing a determined performance to edge Ben Scott (+34) 58–60 and secure the match victory for the home side.
The momentum shifted, however, as Stuart Shepherd (+21) battled well to overcome Brian Walker (+25) in a low-scoring 33–29 victory.
Social’s Andrew Scott (+31) then ensured the damage was reduced further in the final frame of the match as he defeated the very capable Mark Brasted (+15) 65–46 to end at 3-2.

The result confirms Workington Golf Club as Group A winners, progressing to the main knockout stages, while Maryport Social finish second and also advance.
In the other match in group A, Workington’s United Club A closed out their group campaign with a hard-fought 3–2 victory at Workington Legion, but it proved just short of what was required to secure a main semi-final place
The United Club struck first as Dave Chapman (+24) overcame the handicap to defeat Simon Tootle (+43) 73-54 and put United A 1-0 up.
The Legion hit back in frame two, however, with Lewis Straughton (+50) crafting a composed 65–30 victory over Darryl Walters (+25), putting the hosts back in it.
Workington Legion followed this up nicely as George Burdon (+50) starred in a well-managed 56–64 victory over Mark Suitor (+28) for a 2-1 home advantage.
Clive Lister (+19) overturned a large deficit to defeat Jordan Ferguson (+50) 75–40 in frame four and take the match to a decider.
With the match finely poised, captain Andrew Mitchelhill (+9) produced a clinical deciding frame, controlling the scoring against Dan Hallam (+50) to seal a 85–60 win and complete a satisfying United A comeback in the process.
Despite the victory, United Club A finish third in Group A, narrowly missing out on qualification for the main knockout and instead progressing to the Plate competition. Workington Legion finish bottom of the group but still retain a Plate semi-final place.

In group B, Workington’s United Club B confirmed their place at the top of the table with a narrow but deserved 3–2 home victory over Workington Conservative Club.
The hosts made a flying start as Stephen Harrison (+36) dominated early exchanges to record a commanding 73–9 win over Julian Plaza (+26). That advantage was extended in frame two, where Shane Tallentire (+44) produced one of the performances of the night, compiling an excellent 87–57 win against Alan Moore (+8).
Workington Cons responded in frame three, with Brian Kendall (+48) taking control of the latter stages to defeat Stephen Jackson (+33) 77–63 and reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Momentum continued to swing in frame four as Cons’ David Holland (+20) delivered a composed 78–50 victory over Andrew Carter (+45) to level the match at 2-2.
With qualification implications riding on the final frame, Adam Sowden (+46) held his nerve superbly, using his start effectively to secure a 71–42 victory over Ryan Barker (+30) and clinch both the match and top spot in the group.
United Club B finish first in Group B and progress to the main knockout stages, while Workington Cons finish fourth and move into the Plate competition.
Finally, Workington Veterans Club secured their place in the main knockout stages with a battling 3–2 victory over Whitehaven’s Rack Shack in a closely contested remaining group B encounter.
Mark Tunstall (+24) gave the Vets the perfect start, using his experience to control the frame against Chris McKelvey (+37) to take a solid 70–36 win.

The lead was extended in frame two as Kevin Basnett (Scr) produced a high-quality tactical display, overcoming a significant handicap deficit to defeat Lee Dougherty (+44) 87–63.
Vets then ensured the win with a third frame 67-60 victory over Neil Dougherty (+38) for a 3-0 lead.
The momentum shifted in frame four as Phil Denvir (+32) delivered a composed performance to defeat Mark Tatton (+26) 63–48 and pull one back for 3-1.
As frame difference was still a factor with respect to qualifying positions the last frame between Paul Johnston (+50) and Rack Shack’s Mark Carruthers (+45) still had significance.
In a tense final frame Carruthers slowly grew into the game and in holding firm under pressure he took the frame 46–36 to leave his team just one adrift at 3-2.
The win sees Veterans Club finish second in Group B and progress to the main knockout stages, while Rack Shack finish third and move into the Plate competition.
