Millom sharp-shooter Ben Macdonald was on target again in their 3-1 win at Tempest United in the West Lancashire Premier Division.
But he has been pegged back in the race for the Top Goal Scorer award as two rivals Charlie Ridge (Haslingden St Mary’s) and Finlay Stafford (Eagley) are also on 17 for the season.
Macdonald scored the third goal for Millom after a scoreless first half at Tempest.
Tom Booth had given the hosts the lead three minutes into the second half but two goals inside three minutes from Ellis Heasley (51) and Callum High (54) gave Millom the advantage.
It was Macdonald’s goal in the 83rd minute which cemented the Millom victory and enabled them to leapfrog Tempest into sixth place in the table.
Two goals from Charlie Ridge gave Haslingden St Mary’s their 2-0 home win over Cleator Moor Celtic.
It had been a decent effort from the Cumbrians against a team lying fourth in the table.
However, although they matched their hosts in most areas of the pitch, they struggled in the final third and that was the main difference between the two sides.
Ridge had given St Mary’s the lead after 24 minutes and he was able to double his own and his team’s tally after 56 minutes.
You can hear below what manager Gareth Agnew thought of his side’s performance:
Whitehaven travelled to South Cumbria to take on Milnthorpe Corinthians where the 5-0 defeat wasn’t a true reflection on the state of the game.
For 43 minutes Whitehaven had been the better side but then conceded a penalty which Nathan Hankinson fired home.
Then two minutes later, from a corner, Whitehaven were undone and Robbie Mooring doubled Corinthians lead.
Whitehaven needed the next goal to stay in the contest but it was Milnthorpe who scored again two minutes after the restart from Zach Clark – and the game was virtually over as a contest.
The home side went on to add further goals from Luca Wood (66) and Jonny Voortman (76).
Milnthorpe, who included ex-Workington and Kendal midfielder Rob Wilson, had been short of eight players for their previous game but it’s probably an example of Whitehaven’s luck they were all back to face the West Cumbrians.
