It was status quo at the foot of the NPL Premier Division ahead of tomorrow’s home clash versus Cleethorpes Town (3pm).
Despite suffering their first defeat in 10 outings, Workington didn’t lose any ground in the battle to avoid relegation as none of their struggling rivals won either over the Easter weekend.
While Reds were suffering a 3-0 reverse at play-off hopefuls, Warrington Rylands, only Hyde United avoided defeat as Rushall Olympic, Prescot Cables, Morpeth Town, Whitby Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels also lost. It left Reds in 16th position with four games to play.
But Billy Barr will be hoping for a vast improvement in tomorrow’s clash at Borough Park after watching his side’s poor showing against Rylands, the heaviest defeat of his tenure.
They were second best throughout and out of the contest by half time after conceding three goals.
Harrison Wood, Ben Hardcastle and Charlie Munro all took advantage of uncharacteristic poor defending to score the goals which virtually sealed victory by half time.
It was a damage limitation exercise after the break and Workington restored a bit of pride without ever threatening the most unlikely of comebacks.
Their only serious attempt at goal in a one-sided first half saw Jake Allan thwarted by a smart Luke Pilling save.
After the interval, David Symington came closest to bagging a consolation goal when a well-struck shot from distance brushed the crossbar whilst Kai Nugent and Keelan Leslie squandered half chances.
The hectic weekend schedule left Barr hoping for no further injuries ahead of Cleethorpes Town’s maiden visit to West Cumbria.
He had gone into Saturday’s game without injured duo Jack Dickinson and Luke Ellis and one or two players sustained minor knocks at Warrington.
In-form Cleethorpes enjoyed a longer period of recovery having played their first match, over the busy weekend, on Thursday.
