Workington’s Vulcan Park Bowling Club is celebrating its centenary this year and invited the town’s mayor to open the new season.
It promises to be a year of celebration at the club and at the first event local poet John Hasting read one of his compositions about the 100 years of bowling at the park before mayor David Farrar and his consort, rolled the first ball.
The club is on a mission to increase its membership in this special year, through warmly welcoming people to what is widely regarded as a sociable and friendly club.
Chairman Allan Litt said: “The club now have two mixed triples teams that play on a Tuesday which shows the increase already in playing bowls at the park.”
He reiterated that the green is for all residents of Workington to enjoy, adding: “Anyone can come and have a go on a Monday night, and no-one is forced to join the club but just enjoy being with others outdoors.”
Supported by Workington Town Council, the club have a variety of events planned, which will include a bowlathon on June 17 with the aim to roll as many ends in 12 hours from 9am to 9pm.

Local organisations such as the women’s section of the Royal British Legion, North West Ambulance Service, Cumbria Fire and Rescue, Cumberland Day Service and Moorclose Centre are stepping forward to participate on the day.

The club will be approaching other organisations, businesses and individuals to participate.
Anyone interested can contact the secretary or visit the green on Monday nights for more details.
