Bryan Walker disciplined doubles display helped Golf Club through to final.

The semi-finals of this season’s Derwent Valley Asbestos Removal and Demolition sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial Team Knockout Handicap Trophy delivered two contrasting encounters.

Workington Golf Club and Maryport Social booked their places in the final with commanding performances under the pressure of the handicap format.

Workington Golf Club produced a dominant display in sweeping aside Workington Veterans Club 4–0 to make the May 6 showpiece final.

The tie opened with a composed performance from Mark Cowan (+25), who controlled the early exchanges against Mark Tunstall (+24).

With both players closely matched on handicap, Cowan proved the more clinical in the latter stages to secure a solid 57–49 win on the black and give the Golf Club the early advantage.

Frame two saw Lewis Tilley (+40) take full command against Mark Tatton (+26). Making excellent use of his start, Tilley dictated the scoring throughout and never allowed Tatton into his rhythm, closing out a convincing 55–12 victory to extend the lead to 2–0.

With the first doubles frame crucial, Tilley paired with Simon Frazer (combined handicap +36) to face the experienced Veterans duo of Mark Tunstall and Mark Tatton (combined handicap +25).

The Golf Club pairing combined superbly, building momentum with controlled visits and capitalising on their handicap advantage to take the frame comfortably 59–32 and move within one of victory.

Adam Sowden

Frame four saw another strong Golf Club combination, as Mark Carruthers and Bryan Walker (combined handicap +34) faced Kevin Basnett and Paul Smith (combined handicap +17).

Despite the Veterans duo’s pedigree, Carruthers and Walker produced a disciplined and clinical display, controlling the safety exchanges and punishing scoring opportunities to seal a 75–25 win and complete a comprehensive semi-final 4–0 triumph.

By contrast, the second semi-final proved to be a thrilling match, with Maryport Social coming from 3-0 down to edge Group B winners United Club B, 4-3.

Ryan Ismay (+15) struck first for Maryport, producing a controlled display to defeat Stephen Harrison (+36) 71–26 and give the visitors the lead.

Frame two followed a similar pattern, as Ben Scott (+34) produced a composed and confident performance against Richard Kirkham (+28), using his start effectively to secure a 73–42 win and put Maryport firmly in control at 2–0.

The first doubles frame saw Ismay and Scott (combined handicap +25) make it 3-0 to Maryport with 66-31 victory over Stephen Jackson and Shane Tallentire (combined handicap +38).

United B kicked into life in frame four, as Stephen Harrison and Adam Sowden (combined handicap +41) produced a solid display to defeat Andrew Sharp and Andrew Scott (combined handicap +32) 69–33 for 3-1.

Feeding off the momentum, Stephen Jackson (+33) pulled another one back for United B in frame five holding off Andrew Sharp (+32) in a closely contested frame to take a narrow 60–57 victory.

In frame six Shane Tallentire (+45) delivered a standout performance, using his handicap advantage expertly to defeat Stuart Shepherd (+21) 91–45 and force a deciding frame.

Clive Lister

In the final frame United B’s Adam Sowden (+46) faced Maryport’s Andrew Scott (+31). Sowden managed to control the key moments, and in building a steady lead he held firm to eventually close out 67–22 victory, completing a memorable comeback in the process.

Alongside the main competition, the Plate semi-finals produced two entertaining encounters, with United Club A and Whitehaven’s Rack Shack booking their places in the final following contrasting victories.

United Club A secured their place in the Plate final after a dramatic 4–3 victory over Workington Conservative Club, with the tie going right down to the final black in a tense deciding frame.

The opening frame saw Clive Lister (+19) produce a composed performance against Alan Moore (+8), controlling the scoring to take a solid 78–46 win and give United A the early lead.

However, the visitors responded immediately as Richard McCarthy (+5) edged a tight second frame against Dave Chapman (+29), taking it 68–62 to level matters.

Workington Cons then moved ahead in the first doubles frame, with McCarthy and Brian Kendall (combined handicap + 27) pairing up effectively to defeat Andrew Mitchelhill and Mark Suitor (combined handicap +19) 70–46 and take a 2–1 lead.

United A responded strongly in frame four, as Dave Chapman and Darryl Walters (combined handicap +27) delivered a dominant doubles display to overcome David Holliday and Ryan Barker (combined handicap +25) 55–17, levelling the match at 2–2.

The hosts then edged in front in frame five, with Darryl Walters (+25) producing the standout contribution of the night, compiling a superb 42 break on his way to an 84–61 victory over Brian Kendall (+48).

Neil Dougherty

Once again, the momentum swung as David Holland (+22) responded for Workington Cons in frame six, defeating Andrew Mitchelhill (+9) 58–19 to force a deciding frame.

With the tie finely balanced, the final frame saw United A’s Suitor (+28) face Cons’ Barker (+30) in a nervy conclusion.

In a tense tactical battle, Suitor held his nerve at the crucial moments, edging the frame 39–32 on the very last ball to seal a dramatic 4–3 victory.

Whitehaven’s Rack Shack produced a strong all-round display to secure a convincing 4-0 victory over Workington Legion and book their place in the Plate final.

Rack Shack made a flying start as Neil Dougherty (+38) controlled the opening exchanges against Simon Tootle (+43), pulling clear to record a solid 62–35 win.

The lead was doubled in frame two, where Phil Denvir (+32) produced a composed display to defeat Lewis Straughton (+50) 82–32.

The first doubles frame saw Rack Shack continue their dominance, with Dougherty and Denvir (combined handicap +35) matching up perfectly to overcome Adam Hodgson and George Burdon (combined handicap +48) 61–27 and take firm control at 3–0.

The Rack Shack closed out the match in frame four, with Chris McKelvey and Mark Carruthers (combined handicap +41) edging a close contest 46–35 against Jordan Ferguson and Lewis Straughton (combined handicap +50) to advance to the April 29th final.
