Allan Harty, assistant director for corporate assets, fleet & capital programme, Cllr Giles Archibald and Cllr Peter Thornton last year.

A councillor with responsibility for climate, biodiversity and environmental services for a Cumbrian authority has stepped down from the role.

Giles Archibald stepped down from Westmorland & Furness Council’s cabinet with effect from yesterday’s annual council meeting.

Cllr Archibald said he would remain an active member of the council and added he looked forward to continuing to support residents through his casework.

The cabinet paid tribute to Cllr Archibald for his leadership, particularly in the areas of climate and biodiversity over the last four years.

Council leader Jonathan Brook said Cllr Archibald had shown great drive and tenacity and been a leader both regionally and nationally on some of the biggest issues of the day.

With effect from the annual meeting, Cllr Adrian Waite has joined cabinet and there are some changes to portfolios.

Cllr John Murray is now cabinet member for climate, biodiversity and regulatory services.

His brief covers climate change, biodiversity, flood prevention, air quality, environmental health, food hygiene, public protection, Trading Standards, licensing, registrars, coroners, bereavement services and joint emergency management and resilience.

Cllr Waite is cabinet member for environmental services and transport. His brief covers transport including buses, cycling, active travel, Public Rights of Way, countryside access, street scene, waste and recycling services.
