Cumbria Cricket’s Women’s team delivered a strong all-round performance with a 36-run victory over Staffordshire to secure their place in the next round of the Vitality Blast T20 Cup, where they will face Derbyshire.
After winning the toss, captain Megan Smith opted to bat on a promising surface and her side made full use of it.
Despite the early loss of a wicket, Laura Marshall and Emily Renshaw counterattacked superbly with a 62 run partnership in just six overs. Marshall led the charge with an outstanding 63 from 35 balls, while Renshaw’s quick fire 22 off 13 provided crucial momentum.
Although wickets fell at intervals, Cumbria’s middle order maintained the positive intent. Alice Heaton applied the finishing touches with a composed and unbeaten 31 from 26 balls, guiding Cumbria to an impressive 162 off 20 overs – an impressive total.
In response, Staffordshire started well but struggled against a disciplined Cumbrian bowling attack.
Lauren Burrow took 3-20 supported by Jenny Fallows and Zara Matthews, who took 3-30 and 3-20 respectively, to dismantle the Staffordshire batting line up.
Cumbria’s fielding effort was also outstanding, with Harriet Barker particularly impressive in the field, helping to maintain pressure throughout the innings.
This superb performance against a team several divisions above them in Tier 3 ensured a historic victory for Cumbria’s Women’s.
Their reward for reaching the second round for the first time in history is a trip to Derbyshire, who won the competition in 2024, on Sunday May 17.
This occasion is much-deserved given the hard work of the team and the effort they have put in over the last 12 months, said Cumbria Cricket.
Cumbria Cricket thanked all supporters and partners of the Cumbria Women’s team for all their support.
