Cumberland Sports Village plans to be approved

What Cumberland Sports Village could look like on the site of Workington’s Borough Park.

Plans to create a sports village in Workington are recommended for approval next week.

The proposals are to create the new stadium on the site of the town’s Borough Park, home of Workington Reds football team.

Members of Cumberland Council’s planning committee are due to meet at Allerdale House to consider the application from Cumberland Sports Village Ltd on Wednesday, May 27.

Councillors will be asked to recommend full permission for phase one of the scheme – a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of 3,700 spectators alongside a new 3G pitch for community use and outline permission for phase 2, which would expand capacity to 5,000.

Last month, it was announced that an extra £4.5 million had been secured for the scheme from the recently set up Cumbria Combined Authority.

Cumberland Council said it mean the project would have an expanded capacity of 5,000 and see all the terraces replaced. It said it was likely all the work would be carried out at the same time.

Originally earmarked to be open in July 2027, last month it was revealed the scheme would be project managed and delivered by Cumberland Council and a new timetable for work and opening would be produced.
