A South Cumbrian community shop and post office has won an award from Age Friendly UK.
Broughton-in-Furness Post Office, Community Shop and Tourist Information Centre received a gold award from Age Friendly South Lakeland.
Age Friendly South Lakeland is one of around 100 Age Friendly Communities in the UK and is run by the Centre for Ageing Better based in London.
Age Friendly co-ordinator Katie Gatt said: “Congratulations to Broughton Community Services CIC for ensuring that its post office, shop and visitor information service are accessible and user-friendly for older people.
“To achieve a Gold Award, premises need to demonstrate exceptional commitment to accessibility, inclusivity and customer experience, going beyond basic requirements to create environments that are welcoming and easy to navigate for people of all ages.
“This includes implementing best-practice design features, ensuring staff are trained in age-friendly service, and continually reviewing and improving facilities in response to customer feedback and evolving needs.”
Annette Carmichael, Broughton Community Services CIC business manager, said: “We are delighted to receive this Gold Award from Age Friendly South Lakeland.
“It is important that all of our customers, including those with restricted mobility or health conditions, can use our services easily and safely.
“There is a chair handy for those who find standing difficult while queuing for the post office counter and we’ve also put a ramp at the kerb outside so that wheelchair and mobility scooter users can more easily access our premises.
“Since opening six months ago, post office staff and shop volunteers have also been provided with training in both safeguarding and dementia awareness.”
Siobhan Rawlins, post office and shop manager, added: “Many people comment on how friendly and welcoming it is in here.
!We all enjoy chatting to our customers – whether they are locals or visitors to Broughton. It has turned into quite a community hub.”
