Workington Reds’ long-serving skipper Dav Symington has announced his retirement.
The 32-year-old has been involved for 11 seasons with the Borough Park club, clocking up 296 starts as well as 54 substitute’s appearances.
In that time he has 113 goals, quite a number of them spectacular efforts from range.
To that tally there have also been 19 goals in 56 non-competitive appearances as he has become a big fans favourite and an influential figure, both on the field and in the dressing room.
In announcing his retirement, Reds said: “From making his debut during the 2014/15 season to becoming one of the most influential players of a generation at Workington AFC, Dav leaves behind a legacy that will take some replacing.
“A talisman on the pitch, a leader in the dressing room, and one of the most respected figures around the football club, Dav has played a huge role in so many memorable moments across the last decade.
“Whether it was spectacular goals, big performances in important moments, or simply the standards he set every single day around the club, he represented Workington AFC with pride, passion and commitment throughout.
“Football clubs are built on people as much as players — and Dav has been a massive part of this club both on and off the pitch.
“Everyone at Workington AFC would like to thank Dav for everything he has given to the club and wish him and his family nothing but the very best for the future.”
Symington had missed most of the second-half of the season with a persistent knee injury, although he did manage a few substitute outings in the closing weeks wanting to play his part in Reds survival battle.
Workington-born Symington was in the Carlisle United youth system from 2010 to 2012 when he won his first professional contract and went on to play 68 games in the first game.
He was loaned to Reds in 2015 but that lasted only one game when he suffered a kneecap injury and when released by Carlisle at the end of that season joined Barrow where he made 20 senior appearances.
He joined Reds in 2016 and has been a virtual ever-present until the most recent season when injury started to take its toll.
