Cumbria is set for a full programme of cricket after only one match was completed last week.
Cockermouth and Whitehaven are joint top of the Cumbria League’s Premier Division after four matches – the established performers against the new kids on the block.
Whitehaven’s youth policy for a number of years has put them in good stead and they are reaping the benefits.
Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh spoke to long-serving Whitehaven official Arthur Brown about the development of the side and its challenge for the Premier Division title.
You can hear the conversation below in which Arthur also explains the delay in appointing a new professional:
Whitehaven are at home to Dalton, who are still waiting for their first victory of the season in the league.
Joint leaders Cockermouth also have a home game and will be hosting Workington to Sandair who are in particularly good heart after a very good win at Dalton on Sunday in the Higson Cup.
New professional Vishva Chathuranga helped himself to a big century at Dalton and will look forward to trying to follow-up against the current leaders.
Reigning champions Furness have slipped to two defeats in recent games against Keswick and Cockermouth, but were rained-off in a strong position last week against Millom.
They have a visit from Cleator tomorrow and the villagers have enjoyed a decent start to the season, lying fourth with two wins to their name and a good start from their pro Dilan Jayalath.
Although it was the only game that got finished last week Wigton would still have taken the prize for best performance if the rest had been completed.
They beat previous joint leaders Furness by a decimal in the tightest of Duckworth Lewis finishes and that will have given them great confidence for the trip to Carlisle seconds who are still looking for their first win.
Keswick, although beaten by Wigton and then Cleator in the Higson Cup, will be extra anxious to get back on song when they entertain Millom in the fifth game of the weekend.
