An award-winning Lake District restaurant has raised £4,000 for local organisations.
1863 Restaurant with Rooms in Pooley Bridge marked a decade in business with a charity evening for two local causes.
Held on Thursday May 14, the event was part of the restaurant’s ongoing 10th anniversary celebrations.
It welcomed many of the loyal guests who have supported the team over the past 10 years.
The evening centred around a simple concept – guests were invited to pay what they think it’s worth.
Inspired by an idea chef Phil Corrie first encountered during his time at Kendal College, the approach replaces a fixed price with trust, encouraging diners to contribute based on their experience.
The event was made possible thanks to the support of 1863’s trusted suppliers. Caterite and Udales provided fresh produce for the menu, while Hodgsons Fish supplied sustainably sourced fish and seafood. Billecart-Salmon Champagne added a celebratory touch to the evening, with live music performed by Fiona Hanlon completing the experience.
Phil said: “This evening was our way of saying thank you to the guests who have supported us over the years, to the suppliers who have been part of our journey, and to the community around us.
“The ‘pay what you think it’s worth’ idea has stayed with me because it creates a more honest relationship between the kitchen and our guests. The generosity we saw on the night was incredible, and raising £4,000 for two such important local organisations is something we’re all very proud of.”
The funds raised will be shared equally between Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team and Ullswater Catchment.
Patterdale Mountain Rescue provides a vital volunteer emergency service across some of England’s most challenging fell terrain, while Ullswater Catchment works to protect and restore the landscapes, habitats, and waterways that define the area.
The charity dinner is one of several events planned to mark 1863 Restaurant with Rooms’ 10th anniversary.
