Armed police were deployed after a report that a man may have been carrying a firearm, wrapped in a plastic bag, in Carlisle,.

It was reported to police yesterday, Tuesday June 9, at around 3.40pm that the man was on English Street.

Nobody was threatened and nobody was harmed.

Armed officers were initially deployed as a precaution but stood down later.

There was no perceived wider threat to the public.

Police have arrested two people in connection with the incident.

Officers said enquiries were carried out to establish the exact circumstances and people may have seen a larger than normal police presence as a result in and around the city centre.

The arrests were made and a glass device, believed to be used for smoking, was seized.

This is believed to have been the item spotted by the person, police said.
