Midfielder Greg McCaragher is returning to Kendal Town after first appearing for the Mintcakes five years ago.

McCarragher, who hails from Lancaster, spent his youth career with Burnley FC’s Academy before being offered a two-year scholarship with Fleetwood Town.

At the end of his scholarship Greg was given the opportunity via the LFEs Player Placement programme and with the help of Ian Flannery Football Development Agency to play in Sweden for the last three months of the 2019 Swedish season with Ytterhogdals IK.

The team went on to finish second in Norrland Div 2, the 4th tier of Swedish football, qualifying for the end of season play-offs to Division 1, which they narrowly missed out on.

They also won the 2019 DM Cup Final 2-0 and McCarragher scored the second goal in the final.

On his return to Britain he joined Kendal Town where he played mainly in a midfield role.

He then spent two seasons at Workington after being recruited by manager Danny Grainger.

In his first season he made 21 starts and was used as a substitute 11 times, scoring two goals.

The following season he was involved in every game with 33 starts and 13 substitute appearances, scoring three goals.

He then decided to try a change of scenery and joined Gretna in the Lowland League  where he was a regular.

Early last season he returned to Workington but found it difficult to get a starting place and left to rejoin Gretna.

On his return to Parkside Road, 25-year-old McCarragher said: “I’m really happy to be back. I’m excited for the season ahead and to bring the experience I’ve gained since I was last here.

“There are some great people involved at the club, and after speaking to the manager and a few of the lads, I know there’s a great group here. Hopefully, together, we can have a great season and push for promotion.”

Manager Matt Flynn said: “It’s great to get Greg over the line. I’ve been an admirer of his for a long time and I’m pleased are paths are crossing now. He brings experience and quality to the team. He’s played at a higher level, which will only benefit us.

“As always I sign players who have that work ethic and desire, and Greg ticks all the boxes.

“It’s going to be fun watching him play and I’m sure the fans will take to him quickly.”
