Free open day — Saturday 11 July, 10am to 3pm
Tucked away near the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, with sweeping views of Skiddaw and the northern fells, Higham Hall is one of Cumbria’s best-kept secrets.
This summer, it’s throwing open its doors – and you’re invited.
To mark 50 years as a residential college for adult learning and creative retreats, this beautiful Grade II listed Gothic Revival country house is hosting an open day on Saturday 11 July.
Whether you’re a curious local, a family looking for something a little different, or someone who’s always wondered what happens behind those elegant stone walls — this is your chance to explore Higham.
A Day Full of Things to Do
There’s plenty to enjoy for all ages. Meet the tutors behind Higham’s acclaimed programme of courses and retreats — covering arts and crafts, creative writing, music, nature, local history, and wellbeing — and have a go yourself in arts and crafts taster sessions.
There is a special outdoor concert performed by Higham’s Wind Serenades ensemble, led by Laurence Perkins (ex-Manchester Camerata) with guest tutors Philippa Davies, Colin Honour and Jan Willem Nelleke.
The concert will include the premiere performance of a new piece, Sunrise over Skiddaw by Dominic McGonigal, plus classical favourites.
Homemade cakes, biscuits, tea and coffee are available throughout the day, with light lunches served from 12pm to 3pm.
As Principal Dr Lizzie Fisher puts it: “The day is a wonderful chance for people to experience the creativity, tranquillity, and sense of community that make Higham so special.”

Step Inside Something Special
Built in 1828 and set in six acres of maintained gardens, Higham Hall has been a place of creativity, connection, and lifelong learning for half a century.
Higham has welcomed writers, musicians, artists, and adventurers through its doors — including Melvyn Bragg, Norman Nicholson, and climbing legends Chris Bonington and Doug Scott. Now it’s your turn!
On the day, you can tour the 19th century rooms and beautiful grounds, see a special exhibition on the Hall’s fascinating history, and get a real feel for what makes this place so distinctive.
Come and discover a hidden Lake District gem!
