
Whitehaven put up a battling display at Sheffield, particularly in the first half, before going down 50-14.
They had turned round still in the contest at 16-8 but Sheffield’s extra experience, strength and class showed in the second half.
Whitehaven had opened the scoring with a penalty in the 6th minute from Ciaran Walker.
It was a slender lead that lasted only six minutes before Connor Brown went on a strong run to the line that got him over.
Four minutes later the Eagles swooped again when Alex Foster set up Kieran Gill for the second try which was converted by Jordan Abdull.
Showing a lot of determination Whitehaven hit back on 21 minutes with a typical short-range charge and try for Brad Brennan which Walker converted.
Trailing 10-8 after the first quarter against the quality of opposition indicated a decent start from the Cumbrians.
In the second quarter Sheffield could only add one try through Billy Walkley, his 19th of the season.
But Haven had good pressure themselves in this period and were just unable to get over.
Indeed the visitors closed out the half with some repeat sets near the Eagles try line, but they were unable to break through a tight home defence.
Unfortunately Haven made a slow start to the second half and Sheffield added two more tries in the first 10 minutes by Greg Eden and Walkley.
The floodgates were being desperately manned by Whitehaven but the Eagles went in again through Lewis Peachey.
Josh Hodson dived in for his first try for the club and he was followed over by Joe To their credit Whitehaven kept going and on 72 minutes Ben Pearce scored their second try.
Sheffield completed the scoring three minutes from the end with a second try for Eden.
Abdull kicked two conversions and Kai Morgan improved five.
