Workington were well beaten by Morecambe in their first home friendly of their pre-season programme.
It finished to the Shrimps who are preparing for League One after promotion and with a new manager in Steve Robinson a clutch of new signings were keen to impress.
Reds had actually gone closest to scoring in an even and lively opening 20 minutes when new recruit Iyrwah Gooden hit the post with a lobbed effort.
The opening came on 34 minutes when Cole Stockton steered his shot home from the edge of the area.
Just before half-time there was disaster for Reds when the trialist midfielder was robbed by Alfie McCalmont who went on to fire home.
Reds did pull a goal back early in the second half when Gooden was tripped in the area and Scott Allison scored from the spot.
But two goals in quick succession inside two minutes from a trialist and Wes McDonald killed off the challenge and the Shrimps added a fifth on 68 minutes with a clever header from Jon Obika.
Afterwards Reds acting manager Steven Rudd said: “Overall it wasn’t a 5-1 game and their manager was very complimentary about the way we played.
“We will take some positive out of the game and we know where we need to improve.”
