Marathon man Gary McKee has again joined forces with a vital West Cumbrian charity for their latest event.

Hospice at Home West Cumbria has launched The Hospice Half and Gary has helped the charity to launch the event and has recorded a video of encouragement.

Gary raised more than £100,000 for the charity earlier this year when he completed 110 marathons in 110 consecutive days.

The Hospice Half event will run throughout September, with supporters pledging to jog, walk, swim, cycle, do laps of their garden or come up with their own ideas to complete the 13.1 miles.

Those signing up can choose to spread the miles throughout the month, over a week, over a weekend, or for the advanced athlete, over just one day. The goal is to do it any time in September with all money raised helping to fund the vital work the charity provides across West Cumbria.

Gemma Bell, fundraising coordinator for Hospice at Home West Cumbria said: “We weren’t sure whether or not the Great North Run was going to go ahead again this year and wanted to give people the opportunity, especially those who have been signed up to the Great North Run since before the pandemic, to complete the 13.1 miles.

“Even though the Great North Run is now scheduled to go ahead, we decided to launch this to a much wider audience, giving everyone of all abilities and all ages, the opportunity to complete the miles in whichever way they want”.

Everyone that signs up will receive a welcome pack with a branded hospice vest or t-shirt to wear with pride while clocking up the miles. Participants will register for free through the charity’s event platform, where they will create their own fundraising page, which can be customised by setting their own fundraising target, adding pictures and updating their progress for supporters to see.
