Workington manager Chris Willcock is to sign trialist goalkeeper Danny Eccles for the season ahead.

Willcock wants competition for places and wants to keep number one Jim Atkinson on his toes.

Inded Atkinson is at a family wedding on August 21and won’t be available for the FA Cup-tie at home to Marine so Eccles will get an early chance to impress.

“Danny has been at places like Ashton and Chorley without really getting a chance so it’s time he was pushing to be a number one.

“I always like at least two keepers at training sessions when we do a lot of work on shooting so I think it’s the right thing to get Danny on board.

“Although I know people  who would have helped me out for a one-off I think it makes sense to have the two keepers signed and training with you,” said Willcock.

But another Reds’ trialist Priestley Griffiths won’t be joining the west Cumbrians after signing for NPL Premier Division Whitby Town.

Griffiths, mainly a central midfield player, operated at centre back (his other  position) in Reds 2-1 defeat at Consett and had been training with the Borough Park club ahead of the pre-season friendlies.

He also had a trial at Oldham and was forced to self- isolate when a member of the family went down with Covid, restricting his appearances to just the once at Consett.
