A church in Carlisle is alleged to have held a gathering of around 30 adults and children, breaching COVID-19 restrictions during the height of the pandemic.
The former St James’ Church building on Cummersdale Road, which was taken over by the Light and Life Church, is listed in court papers as having been the location of a meeting of women and girls from 18 different households, when police interrupted the illegal gathering on February 9.
At the time the city was under tier four restrictions under the Health Protection (coronavirus, restrictions) Regulations 2020 legislation.
At Carlisle Magistrates’ Court one of those alleged to be in attendance at the church – Kathryn Drummond,36, of Low Harker Dene, Carlisle, was charged with breaching COVID restrictions.
Drummond did not attend the hearing and the case was adjourned to October 25. It was adjourned for clarification of her plea.
Our original report, based on court papers, called the building St James’ Church. We have been asked to point out that the congregation of St James’ Church held their final service in the building in March 2020 and was asked by the building’s owner in November 2020 to remove all its property. The Light and Life Church, which moved into the building at the end of 2020, has no link with St James Cummersdale, St James Carlisle or the Diocese of Carlisle.
