Workington Conservative Club defeated last week’s L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division One leaders, Station Road B.
A a superb 4-1 home win by the Cons Club took them to the top of the table as they leapfrogged their visitors.
An excellent win for Dave Holland in the first gave Cons a 1-0 lead but as Station B’s Shaun Ayre produced a break of 30 in the next it was enough to level the match score at 1-1.
The third frame ultimately proved to be the turning point of the match, and in the feature clash of the week Alan Moore delivered a nerveless break of 31 to defeat Peter O’Hagan and put Cons 2-1 up.
With confidence now flowing through the Cons side they sealed the match victory in the fourth with a win from Stuart Shepherd and as Ryan Barker won easily in the last the Cons cueist cemented the 4-1 match win.
Both teams now sit on a Division One points total of 36 with the Cons outfit placed first because of most wins (Played 10, Won 10).
Workington’s Veterans Club A moved up from the bottom of Division One into third place on the back of a 5-0 whitewash over Whitehaven Division Two side, the Rack Shack.
A Mark Tatton victory in the first got the ball rolling and with breaks of 33 and 31 Vets A captain and Division One leading player, Kevin Basnett took the score to 2-0, topping the break aggregates in the process.
A solid victory for Paul Smith made it 3-0 and as Vets A took the next the match score moved to 4-0.
In the last frame of the match Steve Garroway controlled throughout and with a good pot on the final pink the whitewash was complete.
Vets A move to 25 points in Division One with the Rack Shack still on a Division Two points total of 15, whilst remaining in third.
The United Club ensured they maintained their top spot in Division Two with an away win against Maryport Social.
However the Workington side didn’t have it all their own way as a come-back from 2-0 down was required in a 3-2 steal.
It was Gary Miller and Andrew Sharp who gave Maryport their lead but as Clive Lister and Mark Suitor won the next two the match went to a decider.
In the last, and after a disappointing defeat last week, United Club captain Andrew Mitchelhill picked himself up and in determined fashion he dragged his team over the line to top off a superb recovery.
The United Club are top of Division Two on 25 points with Maryport Social still bottom of the table on 10 points.
Finally, Workington’s Veterans Club B produced an excellent away performance as the Division Two side beat Division One’s Station Road A 3-2 in an engaging contest.
Vets B captain Geoff Banton opened-up with his fifth black ball win of the season in the first and in a clash of styles in frame two Richard Kirkham ground out a victory for a 2-0 Vets B lead.
Frame three saw Vets B’s Shane Evitts drop to second in the Division Two leading player averages for the first time this season as Mike Walker produced another brilliant performance to pull Station A back into the contest at 2-1.
Nevertheless, Mike ‘Sid’ Walker was in no mood to see Station A continue in their comeback as a fourth frame victory ensured Vets B took the match win.
Again, in the point a frame league format every game counts and even though the chance of a match victory had passed Chris Hunter continued in his rich vein of form to take the last and offer the Station A side some consolation.
Vets B are on a Division Two total of 21 points while Station A maintain a Division One fourth place on 25 points.
