Have your say on new council for Carlisle

A consultation is underway on a proposal for a new parish council in Stanwix, Carlisle.

The public consultation gets underway today and ends at 5pm on March 18.

Organised by Carlisle City Council, it has been put in place after the council received a petition to conduct a Community Governance Review proposing the creation of a new parish area.

Local resident Brian Wernham started the campaign to create Stanwix Village Council on August 7, 2020, needing 330 signatures to force a local governance review on the idea. He reached the target later that month.

Mr Wernham argues that the council would enable the community to access more grants than it currently can. However, leader of Carlisle City Council John Mallinson has previously said that a village council would be no more able to apply for grant funding than the city council.

Residents and organisations now have the opportunity to have their say on whether this happens or not.

A consultation document has also been sent directly to householders in Stanwix and the background information and link to the online questionnaire is available at www.carlisle.gov.uk/stanwixcgr
