Cumbria rugby union is to celebrate its finest hours – the 1997 County Championship win at Twickenham.

Recording the fact it took place 25 years ago, the County will be holding a celebratory anniversary dinner at the Aspatria club on Friday, September 9.

All the Cumbria squad members from that triumphant day against Somerset will be attending the event which will be under the guidance of popular MC Howard Nicholson.

Numerous speakers will be saying a few words, including the captain Mark Richardson who lifted the trophy, and Malcolm Brown, the current Cumbria RU President.

Cumbria beat Somerset 21-13 at the home of English rugby union to lift the  trophy over 70 years after Cumberland had achieved the feat for the first time.

Then playing in 1924  as Cumberland and Westmorland they beat Kent 14-3 in Carlisle. They had lost to Gloucestershire in the 1913 final.

Fast forward to 1997 and, after leading 11-8 at half-time, Cumbria eventually saw off Somerset 21-13 with tries from Andrew Bell (Wigton) and Stephen Milnes (Aspatria). Mike Scott (Aspatria) now the Black Reds coach kicked three penalties and landed a conversion.

The Cumbria team was: Graeme Cook (Aspatria), David Warwick (Waterloo), Paul Burns (Furness), Matthew Lynch (Wigton), Steve Davidson (Aspatria), Mike Scott (Aspatria), Paul Thompson (Wigton), Stephen Irving (Aspatria), Mike Armstrong (Wigton), John McCune (Aspatria), Stephen Milnes (Aspatria), Andrew Bell (Wigton), Brian Atkinson (Egremont), Sean Cusack (Aspatria), Mark Richardson (Aspatria).

Replacements: James Cartmell (Wigton), David Johnston (Wigton), Paul Cusack (Cockermouth), Paul Hancock (Aspatria).

Tickets are priced at £20 and include a three-course meal.
