Workington Pool League’s season came to a close with the Blackball Grand Final.
The singles competition consisted of a league format which culminated in a straight knock out to crown the overall champion.
The first semi-final between Kevin Kirkham and Andy Henderson, was a repeat of last year’s final.
Unlike last year though, Henderson couldn’t find his form and Kirkham ran out a 7-2 winner.
The other semi-final saw John Teasdale take on Mike Walker.
Despite Walker taking an early lead it was Teasdale whose attacking play got him back into the game and a break clearance saw him take a commanding lead and win 7-3.
In the final it was Kirkham who opened with a break clearance and Teasdale couldn’t handle the attacking play which saw Kirkham lead 5-2.
The match turned when a missed black by Kirkham saw Teasdale take the clearance and another clearance from the break eventually led to a 6-5 advantage in the race to seven!
Kirkham needed the final two frames and he controlled the penultimate one to tie the match.
The decider saw Teasdale attack first but when a cannon didn’t work out Kirkham stepped up to hold his nerve and clear the table superbly to win 7-6.
In the Blackball Plate competition, Alan Stephenson had to come through a final frame decider in the semi final against Kevin Forster to win 7-6.
In the final he played Aaron Garrity who had beaten Dean Adams 7-2 in his semi final.
In the final it was Stephenson who controlled the match, taking his chances to win 7-2.
Prior to the Blackball finals night the JJ’s Workington Pool League closed with its final three competitions. In the A league top four final, JJ’s B looked to complete the treble to go along with the league and knockout cup triumph.
Station Road D were their opponents looking to prevent the feat but it was JJ’s B who didn’t falter as they controlled the match to win 5-2.
In the B league top four final, Lifeboat A and Cons club looked to put behind the disappointment of missing promotion to claim the trophy.
Lifeboat were in impressive form as Scott Messenger started and finished the match with a winning frame to ensure Lifeboat A of the 5-2 win.
In the final competition it was Station Rd C against Packhorse A.
Despite Packhorse taking a 3-2 lead, Station Rd fought back to lead 4-3 when Raymond Skillicorn cleared the table from the break to give Station Rd C the Best of the Rest title, winning 5-3.
