Workington’s new centre-forward Lewis Reilly is being sponsored by four adopted Reds’ fans from Southend.
The quartet are all part of a Groundhoppers group from Southend who visited Borough Park last season.
That was part of a special Groundhoppers Day organised by the Reds when they invited like-minded football fans from around the country to experience a match day at Borough Park.
Director Les Byers said: “That went exceptionally well and is something that the club will be repeating on a regular basis in the coming season.
“I have kept in touch with the four Southend guys since then and they were all fulsome in their praise for the club on how they had been treated.
“They wanted to sponsor a player’s kit last season but all had been taken so they have been in quickly this time and have paid £150 to sponsor our new signing Lewis Reilly which is absolutely fantastic of them.
“We are hoping that they will return on another Groundhopper Day and will get a personal introduction to Lewis.”
One of the Southend groundhoppers, Scott Wallace, said: “I remember the trip to Borough Park fondly. I’m sure the other lads will agree that the Reds hospitality was unmatched last season. Such a shame the season ended the way it did.”
A second, Chris Bent added: “It was easily our most memorable and enjoyable trip. We were looked after magnificently. We will continue to cheer and support from here in Essex and hope for a terrific 2022/23 season.”
All told the group have visited more than 190 clubs, so their regard for Workington and the Reds is quite a compliment.
Making up the Southend group are Richard Smith and Kerry Fairless.
