Workington Town are targeting overseas players coming to the end of their contracts in the French League.
Coach Chris Thorman has revealed that Town hope to bring up to four new recruits over the next few weeks in a bid to save their Betfred Championship season.
Thorman has admitted that it has proved very difficult bringing in the right sort of players to help Town move out of the relegation zone.
Town currently sit bottom with only two points to show for their efforts so far, and appear to be in a battle with Dewsbury Rams (4pts) and London Broncos (5pts) to avoid the bottom two places and a return to League One.
“We are looking at the French League where we have people in mind and are trying to bring in players from Fiji, Australia and Papua New Guinea who will make a difference.
“Hopefully we could have three or four signed in the next few weeks when we have some crucial games coming up,” said Thorman.
Town have already signed two forwards – the Davies twins Curtis and Connor – who learnt their trade at Halifax and had been playing this season in France. They are both Welsh internationals and will be back in France to represent their country on Sunday.
Thorman has admitted that last Sunday’s 58-0 home mauling by Barrow Raiders was the worst moment of his coaching career at Town and branded it “totally unacceptable.”
“Generally, though, that’s not what this group is about and I’m sure there’s going to be a reaction in our next game at Newcastle,” he said.
