Fourth team drops out of amateur rugby league competition

Cockermouth Titans have become the fourth team to drop out of the Holmen Iggesund Cumberland Amateur Rugby League this season.

After a players’ meeting last night the Highfield club announced that they were unable to fulfil their remaining fixtures.

Cockermouth had previously pulled-out their A team from the First Division, and that was followed by resignations from Aspatria Hornets and Glasson Rangers.

It leaves just four clubs in the Premier Division – champions Ellenborough, Distington, Wath Brow A and Lowca.

Later Cockermouth issued a statement which said: “The Titans committee and players have decided that along with Glasson and Aspatria we will be bringing a premature end to this season as player availability issues have reached a step too far.

“This year our players have been blighted with injury, with no fewer than nine players taking season-ending injuries at the start of the season and others picking up knocks along the way.

“This has been combined with holidays, weddings, work commitments and a lack of match consistency which has made it a season quite like no other.”

Cockermouth official David Whitworth said: “We will come back bigger and stronger next year.”

Aspatria and Glasson have also said that they intend to rejoin the League next season.

All the CARL club – including the three who have left the competition early – have been urged to attend a meeting on September 5 at Maryport when a number of relative items will be discussed.
