Title claimed in summer snooker league

Andy Moore

As the closing league fixtures of the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removals and Demolition Services summer league concluded, the remaining title was claimed.

It was ‘champion to be’ versus nearest challenger as Whitehaven’s Andy Moore, in his first season, went head-to-head with Darren Lawson of Workington.

The opening frame was a tight affair as Lawson drew first blood in a black ball finish to take the initiative.

Moore reciprocated that effort in kind, levelling the match with a black ball second frame win of his own.

This seemed to settle Moore down and the third was a comfortable one for a 2-1 lead.

Lawson was able to dig deep again and levelled the match with a hard fought fourth frame albeit a low scoring one.

The deciding frame was an even lower scoring frame, but 45 points was enough to take the match for Moore.

He thus ended the season eleven points clear of Lawson in second to earn his first league title. Third place prize goes to Seaton’s Stephen Jackson.

The final top-flight fixtures were concluded with this season’s league champion Kevin Basnett defeating Workington’s Mark Tunstall 4-1.

The opening frame was narrowly won by Basnett, but resistance from Tunstall seemed to fade afterwards with three comfortable frames claimed by Basnett as the Seaton player notched up breaks of 46, 43 and 73 along the way.

Tunstall discovered another gear in the final frame to avoid the whitewash compiling a 34 break.

Basnett ends the season as DVARD Division One defending champion eleven points clear of Workington’s Peter O’Hagan.

O’Hagan ended his season a further eleven points clear of third spot despite Maryport’s Sal Cakmak notching up a 3-2 victory.

Cakmak brushed the form book aside as he went into a 2-0 lead with similar frame scores.

O’Hagan then settled to compile a 32 break on his way to a comfortable third. A tight fourth went the way of the Maryport cueist to secure the match win before O’Hagan claimed the final frame for a 3-2 reversal in a match which was a dead rubber.

That leaves only the DVARD singles knockout to be decided.

The final between Kevin Basnett (Scr) and Geoff Smith (+60) will be concluded on presentation night at the United Club at 7.30pm tonight followed by a buffet and prize-giving.
