A very special rugby league game was played at the weekend in memory of a popular Kells player who was tragically killed in a works accident nearly two years ago.
Wath Brow Hornets won the Coombe and Sharp Trophy when they beat Kells 24-16 at the Welfare Ground to take home the silverware.
The two sides had met last year for the inaugural match after Cameron ‘Tadge’ Taylor had died following an accident on the Lillyhall Industrial Estate in January 2021. Kells had won on that occasion.
Money raised from the game and other fund-raising efforts will be donated to the Great North Air Ambulance.
Wath Brow had gone into an early lead with a try on four minutes from Sam Curwen which he converted himself.
Kells got on the score-sheet after 18 minutes with an unconverted try by Jamie Jennings but by half-time the Hornets had built an 18-4 lead.
Kian Ruddy crossed on 24 minutes and four minutes later Curwen went in for his second. Both tries were converted by Curwen.
Kells were first to score after the break with a touchdown from Aaron Burns which Jake Parker converted.
Midway through the half Jamie McAllister scored an unconverted try for Wath Brow for a 22-10 lead.
A try by Parker, which he converted himself, kept Kells in touch but five minutes from the end Curwen landed a penalty to seal the win.

Will Ennis won the man of the match for Kells while Ellison Holgate took the honour for Wath Brow.
The amount raised for the GNAA is expected to be announced shortly.
