The EB Lamb Amateur Cup quarter finals tie made up the Cumberland ARL programme, with some interesting results.
Distington, expected to be the main force after Ellenborough’s move to the National Conference, lost at Wath Brow A while Kells A were hammered at home by a Maryport side under a new coaching team this season.
In the other game that was played Lowca overwhelmed Hensingham A to book their semi-final place.
The final quarter final tie is being played on Tuesday night when Egremont A will host Ellenborough A.
Distington held a narrow 8-6 lead at half-time in their game at Wath Brow but couldn’t add to that and were beaten 22-8.
Matt Hewer had put them ahead after only four minutes but that was quickly cancelled-out by a try from Peter Caddy which Jenson Olstrum converted.
A try from Gavin Martin a minute before half-time pushed Distington into the lead as they finished strongly.
But within a minute of the restart Caddy went in for his second try, converted by Olstrum and a further touchdown on 46 minutes from Liam Mattinson gave Hornets control at 16-8.
Distington had opportunities after that but a try by Olstrum, which hew converted on 66 minutes wrapped-up the tie for the Hornets.
It had been a tough encounter, plenty of end-to-end sets, and eventually it was Olstrum’s try inside the final quarter which sealed the win.
In next week’s semi-final they will entertain Lowca who had an excellent 48-0 victory at Hensingham A.
The home side were just about still in it, trailing 16-0 at the break, but Lowca pulled away strongly in the second-half.
The nine Lowca tries were scored by nine different players – Jordan Allen, Mitchell Todd, James McNally, Emerson Allen, Ashton Briscoe, Callum Sirkett, Elliot Hodgson, Jamie Scott and Luke Stockton.
Scott put over five conversion and Hodgson landed one.
Maryport’s new three-man coaching team of Mark Foster, Simon Pattinson and Brett Smith were delighted to start their reign with an impressive 46-0 win at Kells A.
Two quick tries just before half-time gave Maryport a very satisfying 28-0 lead at the break.
The tries came from Josh Patterson (3), Gary Taylor, Joel Barker, Liam Anderson, Scott Atherton and Luke Baker. Patterson landed seven out of eight conversions.
