Windscale got back to winning ways in the Wearside League with a deserved 4-1 victory at home to Farringdon.
Despite three late call-offs due to sickness, the hosts overcame a lively Farringdon side sitting one place above them in the table.
Neither team were able to register a score in the first 30 minutes, Farringdon firing in several long range efforts, all of which were off target. Lewis Jolly provided the Atoms best opportunity, with his effort from 12 yards just clearing the crossbar.
Windscale took the lead on the stroke of half-time. After dispossessing a Farringdon defender, Matty Pierce surged forward with the ball, firing it low into the corner beyond Farringdon custodian Aiden Mutch.
The Atoms lead was increased virtually from the start of the second period. Pierce delivering a through ball for Jolly who ran forward to slip it beyond Mutch.
The hard-working Will Hughes was next to register on the scoresheet. Jolly floated over a free kick with Hughes rising above everyone to send a looping header over the keeper for the Atoms third goal.
The game was virtually decided in the 61st minute. Jolly notched his second of the game and the Atoms fourth after being sent clear beyond the Farringdon defence by Laurie Black.
To their credit, Farringdon continued to work hard to reduce the deficit and the Atoms were grateful to keeper Andrew Richardson,as twice he was called on to use his feet to divert goal bound shots away to safety.
The Farringdon pressure paid off eventually when Windscale’s mister reliable Steven Walker, was only able to head the ball into his own goal attempting to clear a free kick.
However the final score line was not a true reflection of Farringdon’s commitment during the game but the three points earned put the Atoms back on track.
Windscale were due to host Silksworth next Saturday. Unfortunately, the visitors are unable to field a team after losing their manager and a number of players. The matter is to be dealt with by the Wearside League Management Committee.
As a consequence, the Atoms will now host Shotton Colliery at the Falcon with a 2.30pm kick-off.
