Carlisle United and Barrow have been ranked in a League Two table by Sport Positive based on key environmental sustainability information.
The objective of the Sport Positive Leagues are to shine a light on activities that football clubs are undertaking in the realm of environmental sustainability, as well as to show where additional progress could be made going forward.
Tables were formulated for all the EFL clubs and in League Two Carlisle were placed joint 11th with AFC Wimbledon while Barrow did better in sixth place.
Sport Positive said: “We look at operational impacts such as water, waste, energy, transport, food, education and policies. The goal of our leagues is to share information on positive changes within the structures that currently exist, whilst encouraging increasing action and ambition.
“The information on what the clubs are doing, is much more important than the ranking. So many of the clubs we have spoken to over the past 11 months are in the process of intensifying their efforts.”
Carlisle’s chief executive Nigel Clibbens said: “Football has a positive part to play in climate change. The game and individual clubs are increasingly under scrutiny for what we do.
“We are all affected – we know that first-hand with our own flood risk. We felt is was important to take part in this review. We know we have a lot to do and that have challenges in this area. We need to do more and be better, as this review shows.
“We are taking the first steps on a critical but long journey to change behaviour and think differently.
“Being part of the EFL’s Green Clubs scheme has provided us with a framework to develop new ideas and initiatives, and to help us to improve in future.”
Barrow still have to comment on the group’s findings.
Rochdale and Crewe come out joint top with 12 points out of the 24 on offer with Barrow on eight and Carlisle on six.
Harrogate were the only club on zero points as they chose not to take part in the review. However, seven other clubs did not share information and it was obtained from the public domain and they were ranked.
