Barrow Raiders will be without forward Anton Iaria for the rest of the season after the club announced he was leaving with immediate effect.

Iaria will fly home at the end of the week so he can be closer to his family and play a more hands-on role in the upbringing of his young son.

He first joined the club in November 2021 ahead of the Raiders’ return to the Betfred Championship and has gone on to make a half-century of appearances, reaching the 50-game milestone in his farewell match against Halifax Panthers on Sunday.

Iaria has been a stand-out performer during his time in Cumbria and played a major role in the Raiders’ memorable run to the Betfred Championship play-offs last season.

During his time at the club, Iaria has also enjoyed international honours with Italy, playing at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

Off the field, Anton has been an integral part of the Advantage! Barrow Raiders Community Foundation, helping to deliver a range of initiatives across the region.

On his departure, Anton Iaria said: “I’ve absolutely loved every minute of it. Everyone here has made my stay here absolutely tip-top, and I’ve got nothing but good to say about the club.

“I love this club. One day I might be back in these colours, but for now it’s best for me to be home with my son and young family.”

Chairman Steve Neale said: “We are sorry to see Anton leave, but as a caring club with family values we understand his reasons in wanting to play more of a part in the raising of his young son.

“Anton has been a special player, but more than that he is a special person and has made a massive contribution to the Raiders for the last couple of seasons.

“He fitted in seamlessly to his community role and will be fondly remembered by everyone for his time with us.

“We wish him all the best for the future, and the door is always open for a return.”
