June has been a busy month for Rotary and local Rotakids Groups in Brampton and Longtown, writes Wendy Aldred.
The Rotary Annual Golf Competition was held at Brampton Golf Club on June 23.
Thirty-four teams competed in a four-person Stableford with a prize fund of over £500. The event raised over £2,000 for Green Door Centre which is an ecumenical youth hub in Brampton, which will be used to help buy equipment.
Organiser Simon Whitwham said: ”We are absolutely delighted with the support from all of our sponsors, raffle prize donators, players and of course Brampton Golf Club. Everyone enjoyed the day and the course was in great condition, providing a good test for everyone. This is an enjoyable event whilst raising funds for a very good cause.”
Corporate sponsors included Lloyds Rosehill, Dodd & Co, The Cumberland, Warwick Mill, RAW Insurance, P & H M Ferguson (Hallbankgate), The Blacksmiths Arms, West Cumberland Farmers, Eric Hagan Opticians, Carlisle Brass, Burnetts, PFK and Cartmell Shepherds.
The previous week three Rotakids groups from Irthington, Rockcliffe and Warwick Bridge schools were busy attending the Annual District Rotakids conference. Over 100 youngsters from primary schools across Cumbria and Lancashire were present at the Conference which was held in the University of Cumbria building in Lancaster.
The Rotakids enjoyed activities during the day including beekeeping, bug nests, drumming, lifesaving, seed planting, sign language and water safety.
As part of the closing session, district governor of Rotary in Cumbria and Lancashire Kath Bromilow handed out Rotakids Citations to groups that had met at least three of the citation criteria.
The citation recognises the Rotakids efforts in the community. Irthington, Rockcliffe and Warwick Bridge Schools received one, along with Hayton School who were unable to attend the conference.
Mark Harrison, a teacher at Irthington School said “Thanks for today, the children were high as kites when we returned about all the fun activities, they absolutely loved it!”

RotaKids was set up to support the development of children’s self-esteem and community service ethics by introducing Rotary concepts of service, understanding and citizenship.
June is also the end of the Rotary Year with the handover from one team to the next. Outgoing president Ian Forth said: “I am really impressed that our club members and friends provided over 1100 volunteer hours to support several projects during the year and raised over £13,000 for local and international charities and good causes.
“Our projects included Incredible Edible, Santa Events, Youth Competitions, Race Night and organising a Metal Detecting Rally.”
Ian handed over the reins to incoming president Nic Ramsden and to president elect Simon Whitwham this week.
Nic is a busy person as he spends part of the year working in Africa, however modern technology will enable him to Zoom into Rotary meetings during the year.
Nic said: “It’s an honour to have the confidence of Brampton & Longtown Rotary to be club president this year. We will continue to carry out the best of what we do each year, in particular important community events and support to local charities. In addition we will expand our work supporting young people and also green space issues in the local area.”
