Funding boost for BEEP Doctors from Sellafield

A charity which provides a rapid response to accidents and emergencies has been given extra support from Sellafield.

BEEP Doctors (BASICS) Cumbria has a team of 12 volunteer doctors who work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide enhanced emergency care and surgical procedures that are not normally possible until a patient reaches hospital.

Last year Sellafield Ltd provided over £91,000 of funding to the charity through its Social Impact Multiplied (SiX) programme of community investments, so BEEP Doctors could buy two new emergency response vehicles.

This year an additional £61,000 has helped the charity equip the vehicles with additional kit such as mechanical ventilators, chest compression devices, and patient monitoring systems; meaning they can respond to a wider variety of emergencies and potentially save more lives.

Sellafield CEO Euan Hutton met with charity this week to see the new equipment for himself and learn more about the difference it will make.

He said: “The BEEP Doctors do vital work in our communities, and we’re delighted to continue our support in getting them the equipment they need.

“Our £10m annual programme of social impact investments is focussed on creating and sustaining thriving communities and working with organisations to improve the health and wellbeing of the community is an important part of this.

“I’m proud that our funding will help the BEEP Doctors save even more lives, and get patients back to their families.”

Dr Theo Weston MBE, BEEP Doctors Cumbria chair, said: “This new equipment has revolutionised our input at the roadside and our patients will benefit significantly

“The chest compressor works better than any human and without the high-tech monitoring and ventilation systems we wouldn’t be able to provide the same level of pre-hospital care to patients.

“We are sincerely grateful to Sellafield Ltd for their continued support.”
