Aldi in early planning stages for new Egremont store

Aldi has confirmed it is in the early stages of developing plans for a new store in Egremont.

The budget supermarket chain said that before a planning application is lodged, the public will be consulted.

A spokesman added: “Aldi is looking at a number of sites in Cumbria including Egremont to develop new food stores as part of its target to operate 1,500 stores across the UK.

“We are in the early stages of developing plans for Egremont and as part of Aldi’s commitment to community engagement, we will be seeking the views of local residents and stakeholders prior to the submission of a planning application.”

While the chain is yet to confirm the potential location of a new store – it is rumoured that the site of the former Esso Garage on East Road is where it will be based.

It is also reported that workmen were spotted on the site yesterday.

In September, Aldi revealed it was looking for sites in Kendal, Egremont and Milnthorpe and said it wanted landowners who may have a suitable site to come forward.
