Hockey game full throttle from first whistle

Last game of the year saw Keswick Ladies 1sts at home to Wigton Ladies 2nds, and as usual in this fixture it was full throttle from the first whistle.

A hard-fought contest ended with Keswick taking the spoils by 2-1.

As early as the secpnd minute Gayle Laverty-Fennell hit a long pass from the Keswick half to find Kat Miller whose run into the D was only thwarted by some good defence from Amy Fisher and Jess Brierley.

It was end to end action after this early chance as both midfields created space with some good passing, but equally good defence restricted the chance.

On eight minutes Wigton’s captain Laura Haille, played a ball that dissected the Keswick defence, only for keeper Heather Ingram to kick the ball to safety, away from the advancing green shirts of the Wigton attack.

Then on 11 minutes Neve Parsons continued her good form for Keswick by scoring to put the home side 1-0 up.

It was back and forth again and Parsons had another chance after 22 minutes which she put agonisingly wide having beaten the Wigton keeper.

Unusually, it took until the 27th minute for either side to be awarded a penalty corner. It went to Keswick, and two more followed from the same passage of play in quick succession, but some resolute defence from Wigton held the Keswick attack at bay, and at half time it was still 1-0 to Keswick.

The second half produced more of the same end to end action, with Keswick’s Hannah Williams and Wigton’s Jess Brierley and Beth Dowell all outstanding in their respective defences.

It took until the 19th minute for the next goal, and it went to Keswick’s Emily Willdig who turned the ball in after her run into the D left her unmarked at the left post to score as the ball was played across the goal from the right.

Wigton fought back into the match with Maddy Ferguson making some good runs down the wing, but it was Sam Morrison who eventually pulled a goal back after 26 minutes to make it 2-1, which remained until the end.
