A notable win for Ryan Pearson in Golf Club ‘derby’

Current L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division One champions Workington Golf Club A have extended their lead at the top of the table.

In a derby clash they scored a 4-1 win over club mates, and Division Two side, Workington Golf Club B.

The victory sees the Golf Club A team now four points ahead and with a fixture next week against second placed side, Workington’s United Club A, a win would see them retain their title.

The match started with Golf Club A captain knocking in a nice break of 36 to put his side 1-0 up and with a thumping victory for team mate Phil Sorfleet in frame two a 2-0 lead was gained.

Ryan Ismay also won fairly convincingly in the next to make it 3-0 and as Simon Frazer took frame four the Golf Club A outfit were now on the verge of a whitewash.

The final frame of the match may have begun with the Golf B side feeling like they had been hit by a runaway train but with immense determination it was Ryan Pearson who took the frame to nick a point for the for the Division Two team and end the contest with some pride.

Workington’s United Club A ensured they stayed in the Division One title race with a 3-2 home win over Division Two’s Maryport Social Club.

Dave Chapman delivered a solid performance to take the first for a 1-0 United A lead but with Andrew Sharp in fine form in frame two the Maryport cueist pulled it back level at 1-1.

Frame three saw Peter O’Hagan put the Division One side back in front again for 2-1 before the Social side hit back as Andrew Scott made it 2-2 with a victory in frame four.

The deciding frame brought Tony Hindmoor to the table and in standing up to the pressure in superb fashion the United Club A super sub delivered the frame and match victory to keep his team in the title hunt.

Division Two’s Workington Veterans Club A travelled the short distance to Workington Conservative Club and with a 3-2 away win they now cannot be caught at top of the second tier table and are confirmed as champions as a result.

Julian Plaza opened up with a win to put the Cons side 1-0 up however a confident victory for Vets A’s Mark Tunstall squared the fixture up at 1-1.

Alan Moore turned back the clock in frame three with a beautifully constructed break of 48 to win for 2-1, but with a relatively straightforward victory for Vets A’s Kevin Basnett in the next, everything rested on the last frame.

Playing his best snooker of the season over the last few weeks Mark Tatton was to deliver yet again and with a break of 30 the Vets A cueist took the last for a satisfying 3-2 match win.

Workington’s Station Road Club were in terrific form away to fellow townies Veterans Club B, with the Division One side white-washing their second tier opponents 5-0.

Victories for Tom Thompson and Chris Hunter soon put the Station Road Club outfit 2-0 up and with Mike Walker winning the third the score advanced to 3-0.

John Teasdale ensured he maintained his position in the top three of the tier two individual rankings to make it 4-0 and with Mark Robertson closing out the match victory with a win in the last a maximum points haul was realised for the Station Road side.

Finally, Flimby Social travelled to Whitehaven to play the Rack Shack and with a 3-2 win the Social side kept their third spot in Division One.

Peter McAvoy got the Rack Shack off to a 1-0 lead with a good win in the first but it was Flimby captain Geoff Banton who levelled the match with a hard fought victory in frame two.

Tier One leading player, Kevin Kirkham, maintained his one hundred percent record to put the away side 2-1 up however with Phil Denver winning the fourth the Rack Shack cueist gave his team the chance of nicking the match victory.

In the last a determined effort from Michael ‘Sid’ Walker was turned into an important win as the Flimby player sealed the match victory to make the Social side pretty much certainties for a Division One top four play-off place.
