The second round draw for the Fred Conway County Cup has thrown-up some intriguing ties.
Holders Workington Reds have been drawn at home to Whitehaven – NPL Premier Division to West Lancashire League.
Yet the difference in levels wasn’t so apparent in the opening friendly of the season when Whitehaven beat their West Cumbrian rivals to win the Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy.
There’s still one first round tie still to be played in which Carlisle United are due to entertain Workington Juniors on Wednesday, October 23. The winners will be at home to Carlisle City, which would set up the prospect of a tasty city derby.
Penrith, from the Northern League, will have home advantage over Windscale from the Wearside League and Stephen Fawcett, from the west Cumbrian club sees it as a good opportunity to test themselves at a club two levels higher.
There’s also a good tie in prospect when ambitious Maryport Athletic, Cumberland County League champions entertain Cleator Moor Celtic from the West Lancashire League. At the end of last season Athletic applied to join the West Lancashire League but did not get in.
The other second round ties are: Unisun Athletic v Greystoke; Aspatria v Bransty Rangers; Wetheriggs Utd v Langwathby Utd; Fellside Utd v Keswick.
Ties are to be played on or before Saturday, November 9.
