Whitehaven are set to announce an influx of players from the community game in West Cumbria and the first to be revealed is Kells’ utility forward Clarke Chambers.
In the National Conference Premier Division this season he played 21 times for Kells, which unfortunately suffered relegation at the end of the campaign. He scored six tries.
A Whitehaven spokesman said: “Clarke is an exciting talent with all at the club looking forward to seeing him thrive on his step up to the professional game.
“He also continues the long tradition of community players from the Kells club to sign for Haven and follows in the footsteps of his father Craig who played for the club making his debut in March 1995 and went on to make 159 appearances across 11 years with the club.
“The club would also like to thank the Kells club for their support in the signing of Clarke on his step up to the professional game with Whitehaven.
“Clarke is the first of a number of players the club have recruited from the local community game heading into the 2025 League 1 season and will continue to announce more members of the squad in the coming days.”
New Whitehaven coach Anthony Murray said: “I’m really pleased to get Clarke Chambers over the line and offer him his opportunity to play professionally rugby for his hometown.
“Clarke comes from a long line of rugby league players in his dad and his uncle so this is a proud moment for him and his family and Whitehaven RLFC.”
