The warm weather and lighter winds than usual gave ideal racing conditions at Carlisle Cycle Circuit this week.
Entries in the Youth races were reduced as many of the regular riders were busy with end of term school events or resting in advance of what is a busy weekend ahead in the cycling calendar.
But there was no lack of quality and the Under-8s and Under-10s put on a good show.
The boys’ races were won by West Cumbrian brothers Arthur and Joseph de Wet, whilst Scots Isla Faichen and Zoe Martin took the honours in the girls races.
There was another local win in the Under-16 girls’ race courtesy of Hannah Winkley and the boys’ race went to Zack Stobbs visiting from the North East.
The adult race for Category 2,3 and 4 riders had a good mix of local entrants and visitors. Dearham’s Jude Davison, fresh from a week’s training in Italy attacked early and along with the Muckle CC duo of Jake Dobson and Ryan Parkinson plus local riders Jonathan Wilson and Dan Kendall formed a strong breakaway.
The ideal weather conditions made for fast racing and the leading bunch eventually split with Wilson and Kendall dropped by the leading three.
All five members of the original breakaway lapped the rest of the field towards the end of the race with the trio of Davison, Dobson and Parkinson building up a commanding lead as they approached the finish line.
Good teamwork between the two North East riders set Jake Dobson up perfectly for the final sprint which he won convincingly from Jude Davison with his Muckle team mate Ryan Parkinson rounding out the podium.
Jonathan Wilson and Dan Kendall also finished a lap up on the rest of the field in 4th and 5th respectively and CCA Chairman won an exciting bunch sprint for the minor placings coming home in 6th.
Fastest lap of the night was by the winner who completed the 1km circuit in an impressive 1 minute 13 seconds.
The penultimate race of the summer takes place next Thursday with racing for all adult categories.
