
Action in the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removals Summer League reverted to the group qualifying stage of the handicap knockout with a series of dramatic encounters.
In Group A, Ryan Ismay (+15) claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over Adam Sowden (+46). The tightly contested fixture, saw both players produce spells of good snooker, but it was Ismay’s consistency and a stunning break in the opening frame that ultimately proved decisive.
Ismay got off to a flying start, storming through the first frame with an impressive break of 91.
Ismay continued his strong form in the second frame, outscoring Sowden to take a 2-0 lead.
Sowden, however, responded with determination, and found his rhythm in the third frame, producing some steady scoring to secure his first frame.
The fourth frame was a tense battle which came down to the wire, and came down to which player could hold their nerve the best. Ultimately, it was Ismay, who came up with the goods to edge the frame and secure match victory.
Sowden showed his competitive spirit in the final frame, delivering his best form of the match to clinch the frame and limit the losing deficit.
In Group B, Kevin Basnett (Scr) held his nerve in a fiercely contested match to claim a narrow 3-2 victory over Stephen Jackson (+33).
The opening frame went Basnett’s way in a tight battle.
Jackson hit back convincingly in the second with some fine potting to bring the match level. Jackson continued his form in the third, once again taking the frame in a convincing manner to move within a frame of an impressive victory.
Basnett showed his resolve to continue his title defence producing a break of 49 in the fourth to force a decider. Basnett was clinical in the final frame, dominating the scoring to deny Jackson’s. victory hopes.
Dave Chapman produced a resilient away performance to overcome Andrew Carter 4-1 and keep his aspirations of qualifying from Group B on track.
Chapman set the tone early with a composed performance to edge the opening frame on the black.

The second frame was almost a carbon copy of the first, culminating in a black ball battle, with Chapman coming out on top again. Chapman kept the pressure up in the third, this time easing to victory with a more comfortable margin.
Carter showed resilience by taking the fourth frame, his only win of the night, before Chapman closed the match in style dominating the final frame, sealing a well-deserved 4-1 result.
In a nail-biting Group B encounter Peter O’Hagan (+1) overcame Chris Hunter (+30) 3-2 in a fiercely contested match that swung back and forth right until the deciding frame.
O’Hagan, starting strong, took the opener after a steady display of safety play and solid potting.
Hunter immediately fought back in the second, edging a tense frame to level the match.
O’Hagan responded in style, compiling a fluent 38 break on the way to a commanding victory in frame three, to regain the lead.
In the fourth, Hunter produced a composed performance, including a notable 30 break, to seal it 84-40 and force a decider. O’Hagan showed his mettle in the decider, keeping his opponent at arm’s length with consistent scoring to close out the match that could have gone either way.
A postponed Group B fixture saw a clash of determination versus a hefty head start, Kevin Basnett (Scr) overcame Andrew Carter (+45) in a tense 3-2 victory. Carter made full use of his handicap advantage early on, taking the opener with steady scoring.
The second frame followed a similar pattern, with Carter again edging the frame to establish a commanding 2-0 lead.
Basnett, renowned for his resilience, found his rhythm in the third frame.
Breaks of 32 and a superb 59 powered him to a comfortable win, and one which ignited the comeback.
The fourth frame saw more fluent potting from Basnett, with breaks of 32 and 43 break guiding him to a comfortable win and forcing a decider.
In the final frame, Basnett was relentless, producing a magnificent 51 along with a 32 break to complete a superb comeback and clinch a 3–2 victory, and propel him to the top of the Group table alongside Stephen Jackson.
