Workington Town Women have made changes in the leadership structure at the football club.
The current captain Naomi Foster had decided to step down as she faces an extended spell away from football.
She was diagnosed with an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the summer break, and now faces surgery and a considerable spell of recovery.
The injury occurred in the dying moments of a fixture against Penrith in November last year.
However, in a display of the commitment that Foster brought to the captain’s role, she fought on, continuing to play up to the County Cup final in late April where she lifted the cup for the first time as skipper.
The decision to offer up her captaincy has again been another solid indicator of her mindset as team leader, placing the greater good of her team-mates and the club over her individual aims.
Similarly, goalkeeper and vice-captain Laura Miller, has also offered to place her role up for contention, although her circumstances are slightly different in that she will continue to play.
Miller’s decision has been selflessly made in order to offer a holistic refresh of the club’s leadership, having identified the need for clear leadership in the outfield positions of the team.
Miller’s action has been on par with Foster’s, in that the greater good of the team is far more important than individual standings, a display of leadership personified for certain.
An official statements from the club said: “Workington Town Women FC would like to place on record their total respect and admiration for Naomi and Laura in their decisions to offer up their leadership positions.
“We have been blessed to have had these two great leaders at the heart of our club for nearly four years now and their work in support of everything that has happened over this time has been magnificent.
“We thank them both dearly for everything they have brought to the club and the support they have offered to players and coaching staff alike.
“They step down with unilateral respect from the organisation and with best wishes in Naomi’s case for her future ACL recovery and in Laura’s for future appearances for the club”.
The club will now focus on selecting a new leadership group before the weekend’s fixtures.
