Emergency were called to a serious collision north of Carlisle this morning.
A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s family have been informed.
The road remains closed while enquiries are carried out. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and are thanked for their patience.
Cumbria police said the collision involved a HGV just before J45 northbound.
Junctions 44 to 45 northbound and junctions 42 to 45 southbound are closed and a closure was is in place between J45-J55 northbound and M74 J22- M6 J45 southbound.
The report came in at around 6.40am.
