Councillors from Westmorland & Furness Council have issued a statement following the Manchester synagogue attack yesterday.
Councillor Helen Chaffey, cabinet member for communities, customer services, culture and communications and Councillor Judith Derbyshire, cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: “On behalf of Westmorland and Furness, we send our heartfelt sympathies to the people of Manchester and all those who have suffered following yesterday’s shocking attack on a synagogue.
“Our thoughts are with the Jewish community and all those affected. Such acts of hate and violence have no place in any of our communities.
“We want to reaffirm our shared commitment to tolerance and unity and will work to ensure all our local communities feel safe and supported at this time.’’
Cumbria Police Fire and Crime Commissioner David Allen said: “I am appalled by the attack on the synagogue.
“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, with those who have been injured and with the Jewish community.
“I also want to pay tribute to the first responders who rushed to the scene.
“I have spoken with Cumbria’s chief officers and reassurance measures are being put in place for our Jewish communities here in Cumbria.
“Hate has no place in our society and we stand in solidarity with all those affected by this appalling act.”
