Former skipper Marc Shackley is back at Whitehaven after signing a one-year deal.
Shackley, who will be 37 when the 2026 campaign gets underway, was forced to retire through a knee injury towards the end of the 2021 season.
He had rejoined the club ahead of the 2017 season and took over the role as captain ahead of the 2018 season leading the club to the League 1 title in 2019 and then being nominated for League 1 player of the year.
On his decision to resume his career Shackley said: “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to come back and finish on my terms.
“I had a couple of sessions with the guys at the back end of the year and I really enjoyed it.
“It was an easy decision to come back, as once I was back in training it gave me the buzz again to play.”
Head coach Anthony Murray said: “We’re delighted to confirm the re-signing of Mark who returns to the squad after a lengthy spell away from the game.
“Having previously retired, Marc brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and quality back into the side.
“His return is a massive boost for the group, both on and off the pitch, and his presence will no doubt have a positive influence on our younger players.”
“Welcome back, Marc — great to have you part of the team once again.”
