When Harvey Macadam scored his first Carlisle goal a few weeks ago United manager Mark Hughes said he could become a regular marksman.
It was a double from Macadam, including a 90th minute winner at Boston, which lifted United back into second place in the National League.
It enabled United to land a very hard-contested win against a determined Boston side.
United are now level on points with Rochdale but the Lancashire side have a superior goal difference and from two less games.
Impressively, from Carlisle’s point of view, it extended their unbeaten run to eight games.
Macadam had broken the deadlock on 54 minutes when the Boston defence failed to clear a cross from Regan Linney and the midfielder took the opportunity to fire home.
Two minutes later, however, Boston were level when Lenell John-Lewis fired home a rebound after Carlisle goalkeeper Gabe Breeze could only parry an initial shot from Frankie Maguire.
Home keeper Rhys Lovett distinguished himself with a good save to deny Linney on 61 minutes while Breeze did well to keep out another effort from John-Lewis.
That stop was crucial as right afterwards Macadam grabbed his second to send Carlisle home with the points.
