Workington Inner Wheel and Workington Derwent Inner Wheel clubs joined together to support a major campaign.
Orange the World is a United Nations International Campaign for the elimination of violence against women and girls.
They met recently for lunch at the town’s Helena Thompson Museum where they were joined by two representatives of the Freedom Project.
Set up in 1997, The Freedom Project works with victims, perpetrators and children suffering from trauma and effects of domestic and sexual abuse.
It provides a free, family-based approach, with emotional and practical support, one-to-one counselling and group work with the ultimate aim of trying to break the cycle of abuse, helping people recover and move on with their lives.
Members wore orange and brought along items of food with an orange connection which were then donated to The Freedom Project.
Both clubs also made a donation to the project.
This is the first of the events locally to support the UN campaign which is being championed by Inner Wheel Clubs across the world.
People have been asked to watch out for the oranging of public buildings and Allerdale House was suitably illuminated.
Orange flowers, which Workington Inner Wheel will be selling alongside their tombola, can be bought at the town’s Christmas lights switch-on this weekend.
International Inner Wheel is a global women’s service organisation and today (TUESDAY) is proudly supporting the “UNiTE” & “Orange The World” initiatives by UN Women to eliminate gender-based violence around the world.
From November 25 to December 10, UNiTE ( the campaign to end violence against women) calls upon people everywhere to unite by wearing something orange in local communities, at home, in public places, schools and workplaces.
