Cricket-loving prop forward Grant Reid is getting another chance with Workington Town next season – and is hoping to knock Championship opposition for six!
He is remaining at Town for the 2026 season after turning down offers locally and in France to commit to his hometown club.
Reid was out of contract at the end of last season and with enough middles available to coach Jonty Gorley, he hadn’t picked up much game time.
He probably spent more time in the middle with Workington Cricket Club than he did for Town at the Fibrus Community Stadium.
Gorley said: “I was prepared to provide an opportunity for Grant to remain with us as long as he worked on certain things to improve his game.
“One of those was his fitness and he has certainly taken that on board, which is a huge credit to him as he’s come back into per-season probably the fittest he’s ever been.
“He’s at the front of most of the conditioning work we’re doing and at 120kg, that’s a great effort.
“Now it’s up to Grant to grab this opportunity and to transfer his fitness onto the field and improve in the areas in his game that I want him to.
“Being considerably fitter will give him the base platform to make those improvements.”
A former Seaton Rangers player, he signed his first deal with Town ahead of the 2023 season, at the end of which he agreed a new two-year contract.
Cricketing team-mates at Workington are continuing to sponsor Reid at Town.
